South
African investigators have concluded that the police are lying about the
events from last year which led to the shooting deaths of 34 miners who
 were on strike in Marikana.
The Marikana Commission
of Inquiry says that the police version of what happened on that day is
not completely accurate.
The Voice of America is
reporting that the commission’s spokesperson says that some of the
information presented to the commission by police may have been modified
 or tempered with.
“At this stage this
information still needs to be tested,” said Tshepo Mahlangu, spokesman
for the commission. “The police needs to be given an opportunity to look
at the information themselves and appear before the commission, and
explain certain (details) which we find very contradictory.”
The unarmed
striking miners were shot on August 16, 2012 in what has been called a
massacre.
