Luis Suarez could not rescue Liverpool on his return from a 10-match
ban as Manchester United's Javier Hernandez netted an early second-half
winner.
Hernandez diverted in Wayne Rooney's corner, just 39
seconds after the restart at Old Trafford, to put United into the last
16 of the League Cup.
Suarez, suspended for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic, hit the crossbar with a 72nd-minute free-kick.
Liverpool forward Victor Moses also went close to equalising with a header.
