Crazy kick-off routine leads to seven-second goal

Borussia Dortmund are known for pressing high up the field, fellow German outfit Red Bull Leipzig make them look standoffish by comparison.

Leipzig won promotion to the third tier in Germany, the 3.Liga, last season and kicked off a home game against VfB Stuttgart's reserve squad at the weekend with eight of their 11 players perched on the halfway line.

As soon as two of them got the game underway, they played it back to the only two outfield players to stay inside their own half and then joined the other six in sprinting for the opposition penalty area.

As one of the two defenders sent the ball forward, Leipzig rather comfortably volleyed it into position for striker Daniel Frahn to score in lightning-fast fashion while the Stuttgart players remained dumbfounded and struggling to keep up.

If they had lost possession straight away, this would have looked like the worst idea in the world, but the risk was rewarded and they emerged 3-1 winners on the day.

It could be argued that one or two of the players involved in such a cavalier concept should were encroaching in the Stuttgart half before the kick-off had actually taken place.

But then, it could be argued that the sponsors of the club, formed from the ashes of fifth-tier SV Markranstadt in 2009, were right all along and that Red Bull really goes give you wings...
